Professor Ursula Martin, Honorary Professor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, has been appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to science and education in the King’s Birthday Honours.

Dame Ursula is a distinguished mathematician and computer scientist. Initially working in algebra, logic and using computers for creating proofs, her research broadened and includes the first scholarly investigation of Ada Lovelace's mathematics. She has been a pioneering advocate for women in maths and computer science and made numerous contributions to national and international policy.
Dame Ursula's association with the School began when she was appointed Professor of Computer Science in St Andrews, a post she held in 1992-2002. She was the second female professor at the University (in any discipline) having already been the second female professor of computer science in the UK.
